Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma, also known as asbestos cancer, is a rare type of cancer which occurs in the organs protective lining called the mesothelium. Mesothelioma is associated with the exposure to asbestos and asbestos related particles. Most people exposed to asbestos were exposed at work, where companies covered up the fact that their working conditions were dangerous to not only the workers there but to their families as well. Because asbestos clings to hair and clothing, there have been multiple instances where family members of workers have gotten mesothelioma.
In April 2003, statistics about mesothelioma cases were released from the National Cancer Institute. The projected total of American male mesothelioma cases from 2003 to 2054 is estimated to be 71,000 cases. Though this doesn’t take into consideration the World Trade Center disaster on September 11, 2001, where millions of New Yorkers were exposed to air filled with carcinogenic asbestos particles.

Mesothelioma Symptoms to Watch For
Mesothelioma symptoms can take decades (usually 20-50 years) before they appear. And when they do start appearing, they just seem like common cold symptoms at first, making mesothelioma hard to diagnose.
A lot of people were exposed to asbestos during WWII, in shipyards where ship construction materials contained asbestos. The majority of mesothelioma patients occurring during this time had direct exposure because of mining, transportation, and the production of asbestos products for ship building and construction materials. Asbestos has been manufactured as far back as the 1800s, and the dangers of asbestos exposure have been known since the 1920s. However, there wasn’t much done to protect workers and the public from asbestos until much later. Instead, manufacturers did their best to keep this information a secret.
Being aware of the various occupations and manufactured materials that contain asbestos is very important for the mesothelioma diagnosis. Make sure to tell your doctor if you have ever been exposed to asbestos products or lived with a person whose occupation involved asbestos, since secondary exposure also produces malignant mesothelioma.
As mentioned earlier, mesothelioma symptoms are similar to many other diseases and may very likely be misdiagnosed. Because of this, it’s important for those exposed to asbestos to seek immediate medical attention with any possible mesothelioma symptoms. Here are some symptoms for the different types of mesothelioma:
Pleural mesothelioma symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, persistent cough, weight loss, difficulty swallowing, fever and fluid detected in the chest.
Pericardial mesothelioma symptoms: chest pain, hoarseness, shortness of breath, difficulty swallowing, coughing of blood, and palpitations
Peritoneal mesothelioma symptoms: weight loss, abdominal pain, build up of fluid in the abdomen, bowel obstruction, abnormal blood clotting, abdominal mass, and fever.

Possible Mesothelioma Treatments
Mesothelioma treatment options are dependent on what kind of mesothelioma you have. The three types of mesothelioma are pleural mesothelioma, pericardial mesothelioma, and peritoneal mesothelioma. Most treatments are used for all three types of mesothelioma, however, some treatments are best for one type of mesothelioma while another treatment may be most effective for a different type of mesothelioma. The most common forms of mesothelioma treatment include: radiation, chemotherapy, and palliative therapy. Other forms of treatment include surgery and pneumonectomy (the removal of the cancerous lung).
Asbestos lawyers and mesothelioma doctors have joined forces in providing the best care possible for mesothelioma victims. Mesothelioma doctors provide care for the patients’ health and asbestos lawyers provide care for the patients’ financial future. Mesothelioma attorneys work on behalf of mesothelioma victims to help families with whatever closure is possible in regards to their financial health. Mesothelioma treatment options often include a visit with a mesothelioma attorney in order to discuss what can be done to help their family with their financial needs as they go through mesothelioma treatment.

Helpful Mesothelioma Lawyers
Hiring a mesothelioma lawyer is a serious decision, and finding the right one can be difficult, depending on your geographical location, income, and what you’re looking for in a lawyer. If experience is all you want, that is what should be looked for, but the best mesothelioma lawyer generally has a combination of experience, education, skills, abilities, and personality. You need to find a mesothelioma attorney that makes you feel comfortable and confident. It’s hard to work with someone if you don’t like them, and getting along with your mesothelioma lawyer is crucial. Finding a mesothelioma lawyer that you and your family feels comfortable with can help lower your anxiety, alleviate your fears, and create a better working relationship.
It can be hard finding the right mesothelioma attorney while dealing with your mesothelioma symptoms, but most lawyers offer free phone consultations in order to determine whether you have a mesothelioma diagnosis that can be turned into a case that can be won. If you have trouble getting around because of your mesothelioma symptoms, mesothelioma lawyers may consider coming to your home to discuss the possibilities of a case.
Something else that should be considered is the education and experience that a mesothelioma attorney has. All lawyers must start somewhere, and having an attorney that is relatively new to the field of law isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Although, for large or fairly serious cases, more experienced mesothelioma lawyers are probably the best since they have the most experience in the courtroom.
Most mesothelioma settlements are paid out immediately and in full since many companies don’t want to bother with going to court. Having a mesothelioma lawyer on your side will help make sure you get your money as soon as possible so you don’t have to worry about your financial situation. However, if the company you’re going up against does want to go to court, things will take more time to settle. As long as you have a good mesothelioma lawyer and proof that your mesothelioma is a result of asbestos exposure, it shouldn’t be a problem getting a favorable verdict.
